CULTIVATING EMOTIONAL BALANCE.
The Cultivating Emotional Balance Training emerged from the Destructive Emotions dialogue between behavioral scientists and the Dalai Lama, Buddhist monks, and scholars at the Mind and Life Institute in Dharamsala, India, in March of 2000. At the culmination of this meeting the Dalai Lama requested that the important ideas raised in these sessions, specifically how to manage the everyday obstacles of our destructive emotions, be turned into an accessible secular training.
The task of creating this training was taken on by renowned psychologist Paul Ekman, and accomplished Buddhist scholar, teacher, and writer, B. Alan Wallace.
The Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) training demonstrated great benefits through rigorous research at the University of California San Francisco. The training of CEB teachers began in 2010, and each year 50 new teachers participate in an intensive 5-week teacher training. CEB integrates the wisdom traditions of western psychology and eastern contemplative practices with the explicit intention of providing secular practices that can help anyone achieve a greater emotional awareness and balance. The goals of CEB are identifying and moving towards genuine happiness, and creating choice in how we respond during our emotional episodes. CEB is being taught by teachers from over 21 countries and has been adapted for various settings including the boardroom, jails (both for inmates and guards), schools, dharma centers, universities, hospitals, and more.
